Who We Are
The former Independent Midwives Assosiation has recently become Independent Midwives UK, an Industrial and Provident Society. The new organisation is a Social Enterprise and with Government support, Independent Midwives UK is working towards making Independent Midwifery available to all women who are entitled to NHS maternity care. This will be achieved by contracting their services to Primary Care Trusts (PCT's).
If contracts with PCT's are implemented throughout the United Kingdom, and we are positive they will be, it will be a way of implementing the gold standard midwifery model of care the organisation has long envisioned. Read about our longstanding vision, the NHS Community Midwifery Model.
We continue to pursue commercial insurance in order that Independent Midwives can continue to practise outside the NHS. Read about our recent Campaign and the amazing support we had from the our past and current clients, the public, other organisations, public servants and celebrities
Although entering a new phase, the organisation retains the ideals and philosophies of the original Independent Midwives Association. The Independent Midwives Association was originally founded by a group of independent midwives in July 1985 and continues to exist in the new format for the dissemination of information about, and support for, Independent Midwives.
We continue to lobby for the traditional role of the midwife by:
- Providing a central source for enquires, data, information, reports etc.
- Presenting on Independent Midwifery
- Holding regular meetings for members
- Running workshops for midwives interested in setting-up in independent practice.
Contact individual members for more information on individual practices or general midwifery enquiries.
