Our Vision

Every woman will be able to have a midwife of her choice to provide midwifery care throughout her childbearing year and every midwife will have the choice of working as an independent practitioner to provide that care.

Our Mission Statement:

We support midwives to provide midwifery care to women in simple and complex circumstances in a manner which is flexible, creative, culturally safe, empowering and supportive.

Our Strategic Objectives:

§  Be a voice for independent midwifery in the United Kingdom through being a supportive and dynamic organisation.

§  Preserve the autonomy of independent midwifery and promote its benefits.

§  Demonstrate and promote best practice in midwifery.

§  Work collaboratively with professional colleagues to enhance the quality and experience of care for women.

§  Consult with stakeholders and members to develop our views and areas of focus

§  Continue to explore ways of obtaining Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) to facilitate the continuation of Independent Midwifery services alongside the NHS to support those who do not wish, or are unable to access NHS care.

§  Develop the administrative and contractual processes related to the provision of independent midwifery services contracted in to local PCTs.

§  Promote open-mindedness in the analysis and implementation of worldwide midwifery practice research.

§  Challenge the status quo where appropriate and convert these objectives into reality by working with key decision makers.
