Independent Midwives UK are pleased to announce resolution of the longstanding Choose Your Midwife, Choose Your Birth campaign to secure workable, affordable professional indemnity insurance (PII) for self- employed (independent) midwives.

Following a requirement of EU legislation, professional indemnity arrangement is mandatory for all healthcare professionals from 17th July 2014.

David Cameron said:

“it would be utterly foolish to force independent midwives to cease practising”.

Not only would this have been devastating for women within the maternity system, but also enforced further strain on an already over stretched and under resourced NHS.

By standing strong in true independent midwifery style and advocating the rights of midwives and women they have procured a solution which ensures  future generations will have independent midwifery as a choice in maternity care.

IMUK’s scheme meets the requirements of both the EU directive and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).   IMUK are the only organisation supporting self-employed midwives to continue providing unrestricted, professional, evidence based care to all women.

IMUK Chair Jacqui Tomkins said:

“We are incredibly relieved to be able to continue to offer the same excellent standard of care to our clients that we always have.  During a time of crisis in the maternity services, more and more women are choosing an Independent Midwife as their caregiver.  To have lost this option would have been a loss of basic rights and a real tragedy for both UK families and the midwifery profession alike.  We’d like to wholeheartedly thank all those who have supported us throughout a very tumultuous period and we greatly look forward to continuing to serve families at an incredibly important time in their lives ”.

Independent Midwives UK represent many independent midwives in the UK. The organisation is committed to improving maternity provision for all women in the UK and is working with other support, service and professional groups, including the Government, to achieve that objective. Independent Midwives UK also provides professional advice and mutual support for independent midwives.

Independent Midwives UK has recently undergone organisational restructuring and as a result our website is constantly being altered. The website remains live so that women can still access an Independent Midwife but please be aware that some of the content pages are still under construction.
